Nunez’s pinch-hit HR lifts Sox

Three-run blast in 8th helps Boston pull away for victory over Royals

Eduardo Nunez belted a pinch-hit, three-run homer to break open a close game in the eighth inning, and the Boston Red Sox went on to beat the Kansas City Royals 8-3 on Tuesday night.

Rafael Devers also drove in a pair of runs for the Red Sox, who began a grueling stretch of 17 games in 16 days by rallying from an early 2-0 hole against Kansas City.

Eduardo Rodriguez (6-3) was stingy over 52/3 innings, allowing just six hits while striking out seven. His only mistake came in the second, when Cheslor Cuthbert hit a two-run shot to left.

Nationals 9, White Sox 5: Stephen Strasburg earned his 100th career victory and Anthony Rendon homered and drove in five runs for Washington.

Indians 5, Twins 2: Francisco Lindor hit two home runs, and Roberto Perez and Jake Bauers added backto-back shots in the seventh. Shane Bieber (5-2) allowed two runs and struck out seven in seven-plus innings.

Tigers 9, Rays 6: Miguel Cabrera had a grand slam among his three hits and five RBIS as Detroit snapped a 10-game home skid. Dawel Lugo added a two-run triple. Willy Adames hit a grand slam and Avisail Garcia hit a two-run homer for Tampa Bay. Cubs 6, Rockies 3: Kyle Schwarber and Javier Baez homered, Kyle Hendricks was solid again through seven innings and Chicago ended Colorado’s season-high eight-game win streak. Marlins 16, Brewers 0: Garrett Cooper had two hits and scored twice during Miami’s franchise-record, 11-run fifth inning. Cooper matched a career high with four hits and scored four times. Cooper, Starlin Castro and Brian Anderson homered.

Braves 12, Pirates 5: Austin Riley and Josh Donaldson hit three-run homers in consecutiv­e innings for Atlanta. Freddie Freeman added a two-run homer. Melky Cabrera hit a two-run homer and had three RBIS for Pittsburgh.

Orioles 12, Rangers 11: Pedro Severino hit a career-high three home runs and thwarted Texas’ ninthinnin­g rally with a wild defensive play, lifting Baltimore over the Rangers. Notes: Phillies center fielder Andrew Mccutchen has a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the season . ... K.C. placed third baseman Hunter Dozier (oblique) on the injured list.
