1919: Burglars had a busy weekend in Albany breaking into three separate homes and one business in the city, all by way of cutting or removing window screens, forcing open windows or breaking window glass. Alexander Brooks of Delaware Avenue reported a thief stole $20 from his pants pocket while he and his wife were asleep in the same room. Mrs. A.B, Lerner of South Main Avenue told police a thief entered her house while the maid was out and used a hatchet to open the drawers of several dressers, making off with $75 worth of jewelry. On Brookline Avenue, someone broke into the home of H.R. Armour and stole several items of jewelry but also smashed open a baby’s piggy bank and took the $3.20 it contained. Finally, three crates of eggs and several hams, with a total value of $70, were heisted from the Flinn & Company grocery store on Ontario Street.

1969: Three area scientists with the Benet Research and Engineerin­g Laboratori­es at the Watervliet Arsenal had received the eighth annual U.S. Army Research and Developmen­t Achievemen­t Award. San Li Pu of Latham, Moayyed Hussain of Defreestvi­lle and the late Michael Sadowsky received the award, which was presented for outstandin­g scientific or engineerin­g accomplish­ment benefiting both the Army and the nation. They were among the 45 chosen from more than 8,000 scientists and engineers employed at Army laboratori­es.
