The Schroon River is a quiet but beautiful campground companion. Despite the late hour and the “see-your-breath” cool of a late summer evening, Little Wren and I went for a swim before warming up in front of the campfire.

Our equine camper friends suggested a section of trail connecting Frontier Town with the Hammond Pond Forest, so we rode it the next day. The 2.5-mile trail is a mixture of gravel followed The river was really cold. The playground felt like a real place. I Ioved seeing the horses and actually got to pet one. The whole place was kind of nice.

by a dual track of old road that was perfect for our mountain bikes. It led to a quiet picnic spot on the Schroon where we had lunch. Then we rode back to the campground, covered in mud freckles, laughingly calling out and dodging horse poo. It was so much fun it almost made me want to go easy on the guy from Queens. Almost.
