- By Paul Nelson

A shooting along a dead end street in the Central State Street neighborhood sent a man to Albany Medical Center with gunshot wounds to the abdomen and leg early Thursday afternoon, police said.

Spokesman Sgt. Jeff Mccutcheon told reporters that police were summoned to a Vassar Street residence at 12:25 p.m., where they discovered the victim, shot twice.

Police did not know the man’s condition but said his injury was not considered life-threatening.

Detectives were interviewing witnesses at the scene as they hunted for suspects.

They also hoped to question the victim, said Mccutcheon.

A car with several windows blown out fled the scene, police said.

Schenectady police and members of the Schenectady County crime task force later descended on a home along Eastern Avenue near Wendell Avenue where they could be seen questioning several youngsters on the porch.

A tow truck later hauled away a vehicle from the rear of the dwelling that appeared to have at least one window shattered.

“The car that we believe was connected to the shooting was towed down to the station for evidence processing,” added Mccutcheon.

As of late Thursday, police had not made any arrests and Mccutcheon said that police expected to remain at the home into Thursday night.

Back on Vassar Street, a woman who owns a corner grocery store where the street intersects with State Street said she was in her shop Thursday when she heard several loud bangs that sounded like firecrackers.

When she emerged from her store, she saw police and realized that it was a crime scene.

She recounted how she and her daughter were in the store recently when it was robbed at gunpoint in broad daylight by two men.
