Great Camp put up for auction
Adirondacks home on Upper Saranac Lake was built in 1896
A former Great Camp on the shore of Upper Saranac Lake will sell to the highest bidder Friday. There is no minimum bidding price.
The home was built in 1896 for L. Emmett Holt, a pioneer in pediatric medicine. The property, known as Panther Point, was later subdivided. William and Beth Zollars bought what had been the main building in 2012 and added a guest house. The estate includes a boathouse apartment built in 1950. Current zoning outlawed this type of construction on the lake.
Zollars made his fortune in shipping, most recently as the CEO of freight company YRC Worldwide, which followed leadership positions at Yellow Transportation, Ryder and an executive career at Eastman Kodak in Rochester.
The Adirondack property was previously listed by a local real estate company for $3.9 million, but didn’t generate much interest, Zollars said. He hired Platinum Luxury Auctions for its national and worldwide reach.
The auction house is also selling the Zollars’ 11,000 square-foot home in Kansas.
Zollars said Wednesday the decision to sell the Adirondack property was a matter of geography. The family will continue to be based in Kansas City, but also live in Laguna Beach, Calif.
“Looking at the map, between Kansas City, California and New York, we couldn’t make it work logistically. We’re giving up Panther Point reluctantly,” Zollars said.
The house and outbuildings sit on a 3-acre lot and has 424 feet of waterfront.
The main house is 3,153 square feet and has four bedrooms, three full bathrooms and two half-bathrooms.
