Entries ‘ at a nice rate’ for NYS Senior

The f irst of t wo New York State USBC tournament­s in Schenectad­y arrives t his weekend.

The 41st NYS Open Senior Championsh­ips will ta ke place t he next t wo weekends at Spor tsman’s Bowl. ( The 96th NYS Open Championsh­ips are in April and May at Boulevard Bowl.)

Squad times are at 10 a. m., 12: 30 p. m. and 3 p. m. Saturday and Sunday as well as t he follow i ng weekend.

There is sing les and doubles competitio­n, as well as an optiona l si x- game combined competitio­n. Each squad is for a t hree- game set, and bowlers do not have to bowl doubles and sing les back- to- back. In fact, t hey a lso can enter one event and not t he other.

Associatio­n manager Mike Pettinella sa id entries “are coming in at a nice rate” for t he 12 available squads. As of Monday, Pettinella had received 109 sets of doubles entries, not fa r behind last year ’s f ina l tota l of 114 in Waterloo.

Four of last year ’s six- game combined champions already have entered: Richard Cook of Penn Yan, John Knott of Schodack, Kimberly Hawkins of Newburgh, and Troy Mcclure of Marion.

It is a handicap competitio­n, based on 90 percent of 230, in si x age div isions: 50- 54, 55- 59, 60- 64, 65- 60, 70- 74 and 75- over. For doubles, t he average age of t he entrants will be used.

East Reg ion manager Russ Mills sa id a tournament i n Detroit li kely cost t he loca l stop at least a few entries f rom t he western New York a rea.
