Barkley’s status uncertain

Giants’ RB had limited practice as he recovers from high ankle sprain

-

New York Giants injured running back Saquon Barkley does not know whether he will play against the New England Patriots.

Barkley practiced on a limited basis Tuesday as the injury-depleted Giants (2-3) got ready for Thursday night ’s game against the defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots (5-0).

The 2018 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, Barkley has missed the past two games with a high sprain to his right ankle. He was hurt on Sept. 15 against the Buccaneers in Tampa, Florida.

Compounding the problem for New York was the concussion sustained this past weekend by running back Wayne Gallman in the 28-10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. Gallman is in the concussion protocol and it has left the Giants with two healthy running backs, Eli Penny and rookie Jon Hilliman.

Barkley has insisted he feels better, but he also understands it might be better for him to skip the Patriots’ game and return 10 days later, when the Giants play host to the Arizona Cardinals.

After he was hurt, there were reports the No. 2 overall pick in last year’s draft might miss up to two months. He started working out on the field with trainers last week. He had a limited part in practice on Friday but was not active for the game with Minnesota.

Bills: Buffalo signed running back Senorise Perry and announced the trade of receiver Zay Jones to the Oakland Raiders for a 2021 fifth-round draft pick. Perry returns to Buffalo a little over a month since being released by the team after reaching an injury settlement. He hurt his quadriceps during the preseason. Jones was the odd-man out after Buffalo promoted rookie Duke Williams off its practice squad on Saturday.

Broncos: Cornerback De’vante Bausby says he was paralyzed for half an hour Sunday after wrenching his neck in the second quarter of Denver’s 20-13 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. “After 30 minutes I could wiggle my toes. After two hours, I could move everything else,” Bausby said Tuesday, hours before being placed on injured reserve. Bausby collided with linebacker Alexander Johnson while tackling running back Austin Ekeler and crumpled to the grass. He said he never lost consciousness as he was strapped to a backboard, taken off the field on a cart and transported to a Los Angeles trauma center where he was diagnosed with a cervical sprain. Bausby said he never panicked that he’d be permanently paralyzed because his neurologist reassured him that he’d regain movement. “I was just calm and I just trusted what our doc was saying,” said Bausby, who was able to walk out of the hospital and rejoin his teammates following their win.

Falcons: Atlanta placed safety Johnathan Cyprien on injured reserve with a foot injury. steelers: Quarterback Mason Rudolph “appears to be doing fine” according to coach Mike Tomlin, but Rudolph remains in the concussion protocol following an illegal hit by Baltimore safety Earl Thomas. Rudolph left last weekend’s overtime loss to Baltimore in the third quarter after Thomas hit Rudolph in the chin with his helmet. Rudolph was knocked unconscious on the play but was able to slowly make his way to the sideline. titans: Tennessee signed kicker Cody Parkey one day after waiving Cairo Santos. Santos missed three field-goal attempts and had a fourth blocked Sunday in a 14-7 loss to the Bills. Note: Fox Sports hired Rob Gronkowski as an NFL analyst. The network announced on Tuesday that the former New England Patriots tight end will make his debut during Thursday night’s pregame show before the Patriots-new York Giants game.
