1919: The body of Rose Miller, 35, of Glens Falls was found in the canal near the French-pruyn sawmill after an all-day search by bloodhounds from the Great Meadow Prison. Miller was said to have been in poor health for months and also was “brooding” over money matters. She left home on Thursday night and the next day the bloodhounds traced her to the canal, where it is believed she committed suicide by jumping in. The water was drawn off and her body recovered. Her husband Joseph Miller, former manager of the Empire Theatre in Glens Falls, died the year before. Miller left behind three small, and now orphaned, children

1969: The Rev. Edwin P. Broderick, bishop of the Albany Catholic Diocese, had approved a program that permitted Catholics to fulfill their Sunday obligation by attending Mass on Saturday. The new program also permitted attendance at Masses on the day before Holy Days. The bishop told pastors in the diocese that the change should be made on a voluntary basis and “whenever feasible, this decision should be made in consultation with the laity.” The reasons for the change included overcrowding of scheduled Masses on Sundays and Holy Days, the scarcity of priests in some rural areas and the fact that neighboring dioceses had already begun the practice.
