Ronaldo scores 700th goal in Portugal loss
KIEV, Ukraine — Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 700th career goal but couldn’t keep Portugal from losing 2-1 to Ukraine in qualifying for the 2020 European Championship on Monday. Ukraine qualified for Euro 2020 with the victory, its sixth in seven matches in Group B. Portugal remains in second place and will need to keep battling for its spot in the remaining rounds.
Ronaldo netted his milestone goal by converting a penalty kick in the 72nd minute, when the defending European champions already trailed by two goals. It was the seventh goal in six qualifying matches for Ronaldo, and his 95th overall with Portugal.
Ronaldo has also scored 450 goals for Real Madrid, 118 for Manchester United, 32 for his current club Juventus, and five for Sporting.
Baseball: The Cubs say they plan to interview former Phillies manager gabe kapler and Astros bench coach Joe espada this week about their managerial opening. At least four other candidates have spoken with the Cubs about the job: Joe girardi, Mark Loretta, david Ross and will Venable. college football: Nebraska will play Illinois in Dublin, Ireland, to open the 2021 season. The game is set for Aug. 28 at 51,700-seat Aviva Stadium. Navy and Notre Dame will meet in Dublin next season.
NBA: Rookie Tyler herro scored 23 points, going 5-for-7 on 3-point attempts, to lead the Heat to a 120-87 exhibition victory over the Hawks. Atlanta was without Shenendehowa graduate kevin huerter, who has had knee problems and has yet to play in Atlanta’s three preseason games. Trae young led the Hawks with 23 points. ... Terry Rozier scored 24 points and dwayne Bacon added 21 to lead the Hornets’ 120-99 victory over the Grizzlies, who were led by Brandon clarke’s 16 points.
