Niskayuna Community Foundation announces $25K in grant awards

Money to help kids, elderly, disabled; 14 groups received funds

The Niskay una Community Foundation has a nnounced more than $25,000 in g ra nts a imed at helping children, t he elderly a nd disabled people in the community.

The g ra nt money went to 14 dif ferent community g roups a nd associatio­ns, according to a news release from the NCF. The foundation sa id it has awarded more tha n $500,000 in g ra nts a nd schola rships — made possible throug h donati ons—since it began 19 years ago.

The largest grant recipients were the YWCA of Schenectad­y a nd the Schenectad­y Curling Club at $3,000 a piece. The YWCA said it will use its grant to fund programs aimed at helping domestic-violence survivors in the city, while the curling club will use its funds to upgrade its ref rigeration system.

Special Olympics New York, Family and Child Services of Schenectad­y, a nd Girls, Inc., will each receive $2,500. The Special Olympics will use its grant to expand local training programs benefiting about 250 children a nd adults wit h disabiliti­es.

Family and Child Services said it will use its funds to provide services for low-income residents in Niskay una, while Girls, Inc. said its award will provide support for about 90 Niskay una Middle School students to attend a STEM studies conference.

Double H Hole in the Woods Ranch, Inc., was awarded $2,100 to sponsor a week long Adirondack summer camp for children with serious illnesses. Glen cliff Elementary School was granted $2,000 to create an area where students can“gather to create, in vent, explore and discover by using and working with tools and materials ,” while Bus Stop

Club, Inc ., was granted the same amount for a support program for children wit h siblings who have chronic illnesses.

Other recipients include Concerned for the Hungry, Niskay una Central School District, Niskay una Soccer Club,

Niskay una High School PTO, the American Red Cross of NENY and the National Inter scholastic Cycling Associatio­n, which a ll received bet ween $1,000 to $1,800.

Applicatio­ns for next year’ s grants are due April 14, 2020.
