Rensselaer County intersection to be mowed, evaluated

- By Abigail Rubel

Q: The intersection of Hogarty Road and Burden Lake Road in Rensselaer County is dangerous. Hogarty Road comes to a stop at the peak of a cur ve on Burden Lake Road.

This intersection config uration is dangerous by itself and is compounded by the growth of weeds and vegetation on the left that reduces the sight distance considerably.

Last year, the Rensselaer County highway department did tree clearing and distance improvements to the right turn, which was not nearly the problem that the left turn is, and they did mow the brush growth on the left, but it just grew back up. This is more than a mowing problem. Please help before a serious accident occurs.

A: Rensselaer County Director of Operations Richard Crist said this intersection will be put on the list for mowing next week. The county will also review the intersection for safety concerns.

If the county finds that there are safety concerns, the next step would be to conduct an engineering study, Crist said. The county would also work with the state Department of Transportation for technical assistance and advice.

Rensselaer County is likely behind on the mowing schedule because of an increase in paving work.

Crist also said that drivers can help keep each other safe. “Sometimes a lot of this stuff can be cured by asking people to keep an extra eye on their speed and making sure speed limits are being adhered to,” he said.
