HBO’S documentary series “The Vow,” which tracks the rise and fall of the shadowy Capital Region-based group NXIVM, will continue with a second installment of episodes to air in 2021, the cable network announced Friday.
The second season will concentrate on the federal trial of NXIVM co-founder Keith Raniere, which ended in June 2019 with his conviction on all charges, including racketeering, sex trafficking, forced labor conspiracy, identity theft and the production and possession of child pornography. Raniere faces a possible sentence of life in prison at his sentencing on Oct. 27.
The first season of “The Vow” follows the efforts of a small group of former NXIVM insiders and critics to bring to light its secret “master/slave” group known as Dominus Obsequious Sororium (DOS). Women within the group were controlled through the use of embarrassing private material referred to as “collateral,” and were branded with a symbol that incorporated Raniere’s initials.
In a news release, HBO said the second set of episodes “delves into the stories of NXIVM’S top leadership in the U.S. and Mexico, and into powerful, intimate stories of DOS members. Part two follows the legal and emotional journeys of the group’s founders, supporters and defectors as new evidence and stunning revelations come to light while federal prosecutors and defense attorneys battle for opposing views of justice in a case caught in the national spotlight.”
The first season of “The Vow” debuted in August and wraps up Sunday night.
A second docuseries, “Seduced: Inside the NXIVM Cult,” focuses on the story of India Oxenberg, a NXIVM member who was recruited into DOS. That four-part series debuts Sunday on Starz.
