Saints add 2 to schedule

Siena to play at Drexel on Dec. 22, vs. Towson at home on Dec. 29

- By Mark Singelais

Though the Siena men’s basketball team is still in quarantine, the Saints are remaining active on the scheduling front.

On Friday, Siena announced nonconference games at Drexel on Dec. 22 and at home against Towson on Dec. 29. Both games are at 2 p.m.

No venue is listed for the Towson game, but Siena is playing its home games through at least Dec. 23 at Alumni Recreation Center on campus instead of Times Union Center because of the coronavirus pandemic, and there’s no reason to think that will change.

Drexel and Towson are rivals in the Colonial Athletic Association. They were picked third and fourth, respectively, in the CAA preseason poll.

The Saints haven’t played yet this season because of COVID -19. They’re in their second pause after announcing a positive test within the program on Tuesday.

Their first scheduled games are against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Canisius at Alumni Recreation Center next Friday and Saturday, but it’s unclear whether they ’ll have to be postponed.

Siena’s two contests at Fair

field that were postponed this weekend have been rescheduled to Feb. 26 and 27 at 5 p.m. during the open week the MAAC reserved for games disrupted by coronavirus.

Drexel is 3-1 heading into a game against La Salle on Saturday. Meanwhile, Towson (0-3) is also in a pause after announcing a positive test last Saturday. The Tigers postponed three home games.

The Siena-drexel game had been agreed upon for some time but the sides were waiting on a contract. Siena had plans in July to play Towson this season, but the game was called off because of the pandemic until Friday ’s announcement that it was rescheduled.

Siena coach Carmen Maciariello might not be done scheduling nonconference games. He said he was looking for another game around Christmas since the players won’t be going home for the holiday. Also, Siena needs to play a minimum of 13 games to be eligible for the NCAA Tournament, and it’s anybody’s guess how many more games might have to be canceled because of COVID -19.
