Move coincides with Troy’s resumption of fee collection halted due to virus./

The city will resume charging for onstreet parking downtown on Jan. 4 when it introduces its new mobile parking app.

The announcement of the parking fees at the street kiosks starting up again is on the city ’s website under “parking.” The parking meter collections were halted earlier this year in response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Troy joins the cities of Albany and Schenectady in the Capital Region with parking apps for their downtowns. The Parkalbany smartphone app has been in use since 2018, while Schenectady ’s came online a few months ago.

Mayor Patrick Madden said in a statement that, “Launch of our new parking management system is another step forward in improving parking options in downtown Troy.”

While Troy ’s parking app from Passport Parking will be available, drivers may still pay at the kiosks on the street with cash or credit card. Troy has had parking kiosks downtown since 2008. The new parking app requires users to enter a four-digit parking zone number, the amount of time for parking, license plate information for a first-time user and payment information.

Troy ’s parking app through Passport Parking may be downloaded on IOS and Android devices and may be reached at www.passportparking.com online.

The city also has started an online payment system for monthly parking permit

holds in the city-owned lots and garages downtown. This also begins in January when the monthly permit fee rises to $75 from the current rate of $60.

Troy has a contract with Passport Labs, Inc. for the parking app service for an annual payment of $22,550 plus fees per transaction. Passport also provides the parking app service to Albany and Schenectady.
