Mountaineers deal Spiders first defeat of season, 87-71
Miles Mcbride scored 20 points and 11th-ranked the West Virginia Mountaineers rode a hot-shooting first half to an 87-71 victory over No. 19 Richmond on Sunday.
West Virginia (5-1) made 10 straight shots during an 18-1 run at the end of the first half for a 52-30 halftime lead.
The Mountaineers shot 66 percent (23-for-35) from the floor in the half, making 6 of 9 3-point attempts.
Tyler Burton had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Richmond (4-1).

Obituaries: Jimmy Collins, who coached the Illinois-chicago men to the NCAA Tournament three times in 14 seasons, died Sunday morning. He was 74. ... Former NCAA administrator Sue Donohoe died Sunday after a brief illness, the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame announced. Donohoe, 61, was a longtime board member of the Hall of Fame and a Class of 2021 inductee. The Hall of Fame did not detail what caused her death but said it wasn’t related to COVID-19.
