Lott living up to the hype

Columbia grad having standout season at Marquette University

Selena Lott was named to the preseason All-big East Conference first team, and the Marquette University standout has more than lived up to the advanced billing.

Senior Lott, a 5-foot-11 senior guard from Troy and a Columbia High graduate, was named to the league’s weekly honor roll for the third time last Monday. She was the league’s Player of the Week on Dec. 14.

Lott was honored this week after a seasonhigh 30 points and five rebounds in a 72-61 league victory over St. John’s last Sunday in Queens in a game seen on FS1. She connected on 11 of 14 shots from the field.

On the season, Lott is averaging a team-high 17.4 points a game (sixth-best in the league) and has connected on 53 of 98 shots from the field (54.1 percent) and is 17-for-37 from 3point range (45.9). She is also averaging 5.3 rebounds a game with 33 assists, 12 steals and six blocked shots. Lott averaged 17.1 points as a junior and was named to the All-big East second team.

The Golden Eagles are 7-2 overall and 4-1 in Big East play after the St. John’s victory.

Nick Lydon (Clifton Park)

The junior is a diver with the Florida men’s swim team. The Shenendeho­wa High graduate finished sixth in both the 1meter and 3-meter dives at the Auburn Invitation­al prior to the semester break Nov. 18-20 in Auburn, Ala. He was Florida’s top finisher in the 1-meter (294.68) and the second Gator in the 3-meter (312.15). Lydon, who earned a berth in the NCAA Diving Zones his first two seasons, and Florida return to Auburn for a Southeast Conference dual meet Saturday.

started one for the Rhode Island women’s basketball team. The Rams are 4-5 overall and 4-2 in the Atlantic-10 Conference after a 56-53 league victory over Richmond last Friday in Richmond, Va. The Saratoga High graduate had seven points in the win. She is averaging 8.6 points with 16 rebounds, 11 assists and six steals and is averaging 28.1 minutes of playing time a game. She had 12 points each against Penn State and Massachuse­tts.

Zac Zwijacz (Saratoga Springs)

The Penn State men’s swim team dropped its season opener 163.5-134.5 to No. 18 Ohio State last Saturday in Columbus, Ohio, but the Nittany Lions got

a big effort from the junior. The Saratoga High graduate won the 200 butterfly (1 minute, 47.42 seconds), tied a teammate for first in the 100 butterfly and

swam legs on the winning 200 medley relay (1:27.68) and the 400 freestyle relay (2:58.51). He finished ninth in the 200 fly with a school-record time of 1:44.34 at last year’s Big Ten Conference Championsh­ip.

Connor Murphy (Hudson Falls)

The 6-4, 200-pound sophomore recorded the first shutout of his career as he led the Northeaste­rn men’s hockey team to a 7-0 Hockey East triumph over New Hampshire on Jan. 13. He had a career-high 37 saves. Murphy has played every minute in goal for the 6-3-2 Huskies. He has given up 27 goals (2.42 goals-against average) with 314 saves (.921 save percentage).

Sophie Tougas (Glens Falls)

The 6-0 freshman shooting guard is coming off the bench for the Cal-bakersfiel­d women’s basketball team. The Roadrunner­s are 4-4 overall and 4-2 in the Big West Conference. Tougas,

who played at Glens Falls High and graduated from Bradford Christian Academy (N.H.), is averaging 4.5 points and 2.1 rebounds a game but is averaging 7.5 points over the past four games. She has hit on 10 of 26 3-point tries.

Andrew Sischo (Guilderlan­d)

The Daemen men’s basketball standout has seen the start of the season put on hold after a positive COVID -19 test within the team’s Tier 1 personnel. The Wildcats were slated to open last Saturday, but that game and two others have been postponed. Sischo, a two-time East Coast Conference Player of the Year and a former Guilderlan­d High standout, is set to take the floor on Jan. 29 against Gannon.
