Danes to hire Killings
Marquette assistant set to succeed Brown
Dwayne Killings, associate head coach at Marquette the past three seasons, will be the new men’s basketball coach at the University at Albany, several media outlets reported Monday night.
WNYT sports director Rodger Wyland, who is the play-by-play announcer for the university’s basketball and football teams, was first to report the hiring, which came two weeks after Ualbany did not renew the contract of 20-year head coach Will Brown.
Reached on his cellphone, Killings referred the reporter to Mark Benson, the Ualbany athletic director. Benson did not answer a call to his cell.
Killings, a native of Amherst, Mass., also had stints as an assistant coach at Connecticut (201618), under Kevin Ollie, and Temple (2011-16), on the staff of Fran Dunphy. He was hired in 2018 by
Marquette head coach Steve Wojciechowski.
Ben Steele, the Marquette beat writer for the Milwaukee Journal-sentinel, on Twitter called Killings “a true gentleman who is well-liked by everyone in the game.”
Marquette was 13-14 this season, losing to Georgetown in the first round of the Big East Tournament. The Warriors were 5536 in the three seasons Killings was an assistant.
Killings, who turns 40 on
April 4, is a 2003 graduate of Hampton, earning a degree in sports management. He was a walk-on at Massachusetts for three years before transferring to Hampton. Killings’ first job out of college was as a special assistant with the NBA’S Charlotte Bobcats, where he served as video coordinator and helped with player development.
From there, Killings spent three seasons as Temple’s assistant director of men’s basketball operations. He moved on to the NBA’S D -League, monitoring player development programs, and spent the 2010-11 season on the staff at Boston University, which won the America East title that season.
