Dream of less gun violence can be reality through unity
We mourn with pain and remorse when citizens die but, still, we hold the dream rooted in the American past when obstacles were overcome by joining together to create just solutions.
We have a dream that one day in the red and blue towns and states of Santa Fe, Texas, and Newtown, Conn., the sons and daughters of gun owners and parents of gun victims will sit together at the table of brotherhood and develop laws providing both safety and safeguards.
We have a dream that one day the communities of Boulder, Colo., and Parkland, Fla., will be transformed into oases of security as conservatives and liberals work together for the common good.
We have a dream that one day in Blacksburg, Va., and Roseburg, Ore., little boys and girls will learn and play and not fear the sounds of gunshots, knowing that Democrats and Republicans have ensured that the bullets are not meant for them.
We have a dream that our own little children and grandchildren will not be afraid to go to school or shop but live with the faith that their leaders have put aside their differences to keep them safe.
We have a dream that we will be able to hew out of the mountain of discord, a pillar of cooperation knowing our children have put their trust in us.
We have a dream that by uniting to solve common problems, we will speed up the day when gun owners and gun fearers will join citizens from every village, city and state to raise their hands and shout, “Safe at last! Safe at last!”
