Mattis’ hat trick gives Eagles edge

- Sports staff

Kevin Mattis finished with a hat trick as Bethlehem pulled away in the second half to earn a 3-2 win over Queensbury in a non-league boys’ soccer game in Albany.

The Eagles and Spartans traded goals in the first half, but Bethlehem (5-0) took the lead for good in the 59th minute when Mattis finished off a ball that was deflected by a Spartans defender.

Mattis scored his third goal on a through ball from Jack Burnham in the 68th minute to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead. Jude Jordi-donnelly slotted home a penalty kick in the 75th minute to give Queensbury life, but they had only more shot — that went wide — the rest of the game.

Luke Eichen also scored for Queensbury.

Bethlehem held a 10-3 advantage in shots on goal.
