Metheny enters transfer portal
University at Albany redshirt senior linebacker Levi Metheny announced Tuesday he is entering the NCAA transfer portal.
He will use the extra year of eligibility the NCAA granted athletes because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“This has been a dream come true and I am proud to be a member of the purple family,” Metheny said on Twitter. “This has not been an easy decision for me, but given an extra year of eligibility, I have decided to enter the transfer portal to explore other options academically and athletically.”
Metheny, from Bethel Park, Pa., played in three games and made 18 tackles, 14 solo, this spring before suffering an arm injury against Rhode Island. He missed the loss to Stony Brook before Ualbany opted out of its final two contests, citing excessive injuries.
In 2019, he led the Great Danes with 120 tackles and helped them reach the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs. He was named second-team all-colonial Athletic Association.
“I support Levi’s decision and understand the direction he wants to go as a student,” Ualbany head coach Greg Gattuso said by text. “He has been a great player, student and leader of our program. He does things the ‘right way.’ I wish him well.”
Gattuso said he is meeting with his seniors this week to determine their plans.
Gattuso said senior running back Karl Mofor is making himself available for the NFL draft. Depending on what happens, Mofor will decide on moving forward or returning to college for a final year of eligibility.
