MOVIE QUIZ

- —C.J. Lais, Jr.

We officially and finally entered into Summer 2021 this week after a long, difficult year and a half. And with summer comes … summer movies! It might not be as big a film season as usual yet, but anything ’s better than last year.

Keeping with that tropical-like topic, this week’s quiz features famous movies that famously referenced the hottest three months of the year in dialogue or song. We give you the quote, you give us the title. We’ve also included the year each film was released to help you out.

Some of the voices mouthing these gems included Richard Dreyfuss, Marilyn Monroe, Ryan Phillippe, James Garner, Kim Stanley and … Haylie Duff ?

1. “Summer romances begin for all kinds of reasons, but when all is said and done, they have one thing in common. They're shooting stars, a spectacular moment of light in the heavens, fleeting glimpse of eternity, and in a flash they're gone.” (2004)

2. “I can’t wait to see what my buddies all think of me. Just imagine how much cooler I’ll be in summer.” (2013)

3. “You know I haven't put on one ounce in 10 years, Stella? I weigh what I weighed the summer you left Belle Reve. The summer Dad died and you left us ...” (1951)

4. “I've been coming here every summer of my adult life, and every summer there she is oiling and lotioning, lotioning and oiling ... smiling. I can't take this no more!” (1993)

5. “Summer heat, boy and girl meet.” (1978)

7. “You have yourself a few flings this summer. I bet you’re quite a ladies’ man, huh?” (1967)

8. “When I was a boy, just about every summer we’d take a vacation. And you know, in 18 years, we never had fun.” (1983)

9. “I’m only trying to say that Amity is a summer town. We need summer dollars. Now, if the people can’t swim here, they’ll be glad to swim at the beaches of Cape Cod, the Hamptons, Long Island …” (1975)

11. “How do you know this is even related?

You did a lot of things last summer.” (1997)

12. “Somehow, it was hotter then. Men’s stiff collars wilted by nine in the morning; ladies bathed before noon, after their three o’clock naps, and by nightfall were like soft teacakes with frosting from sweating and sweet talcum. The day was 24 hours long, but it seemed longer. There was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go and nothing to buy … and no money to buy it with. Although Maycomb County had recently been told that it had nothing to fear but fear itself … That summer, I was six years old.” (1962)

13. “It’s summer! We’re supposed to be having fun! This isn’t fun, it’s scary and disgusting.” (2017)

14. “I’m just not made for this heat. This is my first summer in New York and it’s practically killing me. You know what I tried yesterday? I tried to sleep in the bathtub. Just lying there up to my neck in cold water … But there was something wrong with the faucet. It kept dripping. It was keeping me awake. So you know what I did? I pushed my big toe up the faucet … The only thing was, my toe got stuck and I couldn’t get it back out again.” (1955)

15. “If you vote for me, it will be Summer all year round.” (2004)
