ALBANY FIREWOLVES Team changes logo before first game
Firewolves alter wolf from sideways view to straight-on depiction
Before making their National Lacrosse League debut at Times Union Center, the Albany Firewolves are changing their logo.
Firewolves president George Manias said in a news release the change was “prompted in part by feedback from a variety of important stakeholders,” without identifying the stakeholders.
The original logo revealed in April was a snarling wolf ’s head shown from the side in the colors of maroon red, a fiery red, a dark purple, and a gray accent. The new logo shows the wolf looking directly at the viewer with a different color scheme.
“We are excited about our newest logo design as it brings more versatility and options to the many marketing and community relations initiatives we are planning,” Manias said.
He didn’t return a phone call and text seeking comment.
The first logo bore some resemblance to Stony Brook University’s Seawolves logo. Stony Brook athletic director Shawn Heilbron said by email it’s possible the school’s lawyers contacted the Firewolves.
“The logo was originally sent to me by our general counsel’s office, so something could have been sent to the (Firewolves),” Heilbron said.
The Firewolves’ brand identity was designed by Upside Collective, a local firm providing branding, graphic design, web development, video production and visual effects, the team announced in April.
The original logo encapsulated “a unique mystical wolf emerging from fire with fierceness and strength,” the team said in a news release.
The Firewolves will play their first game in early December after relocating from Connecticut in February.
