Dodgers’ Urias first to reach 11 wins

Pitcher shuts down the Marlins to help L.A . avoid sweep vs. Miami

-

Julio Urias allowed Jazz Chisholm’s leadoff homer, then pitched shutout ball through the seventh inning for his major league-leading 11th win, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Miami Marlins 6-1 Thursday to avoid a four-game sweep.

Urias (11-3) gave up just four more hits, struck out nine and walked two.

Chris Taylor’s RBI single tied the score in the fourth. Matt Beaty singled in the go-ahead run in the fifth, chasing Sandy Alcantara (5-8), and Will Smith hit a sacrifice fly off David Hess.

Miami announced Don Mattingly will return for a seventh season in 2022.

Athletics 2, Astros 1: Jed Lowrie and Matt Olson drove in runs to back Frankie Montas (8-7), who allowed one run and five hits in 6 2⁄3 innings and struck out 10. Oakland stopped a three-game skid and ended Houston’s six-game winning streak.

Rockies 9, Diamondbacks 3: Dom Nunez, hitting just .159, doubled twice and singled as Colorado avoided a three-game sweep by Arizona, a major league-worst 25-64.

Indians 7, Royals 4: Franmil Reyes hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning as Cleveland ended a ninegame losing streak — its longest under manager Terry Francona.

Twins 5, Tigers 3: Ryan Jeffers and Miguel Sano homered and Minnesota took advantage of a replay reversal on a force play at second base to score three runs in the seventh inning, rallying past Detroit.

Notes: The threat of rain throughout the night forced the postponement of Thursday’s game between Toronto and Baltimore. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sept. 11 . ... Trevor Bauer’s administrative leave was extended by seven days through July 15 by Major League Baseball and the players’ association while the sport’s investigators check into allegations of sexual misconduct against the Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher. Bauer was placed on seven days’ paid leave on July 2 under the joint domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy adopted by MLB and the players’ union in 2015. The paid leave has been repeatedly extended for players in the past while investigations proceed. Police in Pasadena, Calif., and MLB are investigating the allegations made against Bauer by a Southern California woman who says the pitcher choked her to the point where she lost consciousness and punched her during two sexual encounters earlier this year.
