Nelly’s Treats making sweets for human and canine customers

- By Rick Karlin

This city is seeing a mini-cake boom. With one bakery recently moving to a larger spot, due in part to POST-COVID demand, a new shop specializing in treats for both humans and canines, has opened here on Remsen Street.

Nelly’s Treats, at 190 Remsen St., had its grand opening Friday afternoon. In addition to baked goods, the shop will offer baking classes. Owner and baker Renel Turner said she was inspired after watching a baking competition on TV in 2011, and started experimenting, according to Stephen Napier, Cohoes’ economic and community development director.

She baked her first cake in December of that year and has been honing her skills since then. In addition to creating specialty cakes and other baked goods for people — and a special line of treats for pets — Turner also will offer baking and decorating classes in the boutique bakery space on Remsen Street. Nelly’s Treats is one several new businesses that have opened in Cohoes since 2020. She joins a new brewery, an ice cream shop, restaurants, diners, salons, retail stores, and more that have been part of a revitalization push.

“We welcome Renel Turner to our growing community of entrepreneurs. We are delighted that she is creating yet another destination business here in Cohoes; a place where people can stop by to purchase treats, or stay to take a class and learn to make their own cakes and maybe even make new friends,” said Mayor Bill Keeler.

Napier added that Nelly’s was previously occupied by Cake Street Sweets, which moved to a larger spot at 130 Remsen St. Nelly’s Treats will be open Thursday through Monday.
