Brothers propose self-storage center

100,000 square-foot facility would include climate control

A pair of brothers, originally from the Capital Region and now based in Atlanta, Georgia, are looking to build a 100,000 square-foot self-storage center on Erie Boulevard. Diamond Point Development, run by Jason and Aaron Sommer, is looking to build the class A climate-controlled facility at 1806 Erie Boulevard, a site across the street from the Rivers Casino complex that currently houses what they say are antiquated offices and warehouse buildings.

They are hoping to break ground this fall, with delivery projected for summer 2022.

It would be the city’s only class A storage facility — with climate control and indoor access as well as more than 700 units. Some would be as small as 5 feet by 5 feet (popular with college students), with others running to 10 feet by 30 feet.

Both brothers graduated from Niskayuna High School. After college, their careers took them to Atlanta, where they founded Diamond Point Development.

Both now work in all phases of commercial real estate, including groundup self-storage development and asset management. They operate selfstorage facilities in Atlanta and also are planning them in Poughkeepsie; Portland, Maine; and Springfield, Mass. “Aaron and I still have roots in the Capital District, and we visit frequently,” said Jason Sommer, principal at the company. “We have taken note of the renaissance of downtown Schenectady and want to be a part of the successful revitalization.”
