Man shot twice in week

Victim critical after being wounded on Albany street

- News staff

Albany police said a man who was in critical condition after being wounded Saturday by gunfire had also been shot a week earlier.

Police responded to the area of Ontario and Benson streets at approximately 5:35 p.m. after receiving reports about shots being fired, according to a news release. At the scene, police found evidence consistent with gunshots and began to conduct an investigation.

Shortly after police heard about the incident, staff from Albany Medical Center Hospital notified them that an 18-yearold man was at the emergency room with a gunshot wound to the back, police said. It was determined that the man was shot in proximity of Ontario and Benson streets.

The victim is being treated at the hospital and is listed in critical, but stable condition, according to police.

Police learned that the victim in Saturday’s shooting is the same man who was shot on July 12 around 4:45 p.m. while on Clinton Avenue between Lark and Dove streets. During that incident, the victim sustained a gunshot wound to the arm.

This is the latest in a string of shootings to hit Albany this month — which has included two 15-year-olds shot near the Capitol on July 11. The unidentified man shot for the second time on Saturday is the 11th person injured by gunfire in the city in July, according to a review of Albany Police Department’s social media posts by the Times Union.

Year to date, the city has had 33 shoot

ings that resulted in 46 people injured. Of those, nine of them were fatal. Arrests have been made in seven of those homicides, with the remaining two under investigation, police spokesman Steve Smith said on Sunday.

At this time, both shooting incidents involving the one victim remain under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the Albany Police Detective Division at 518462-8039.
