Gauff out of Olympics after positive virus test
U.S. rising star Coco Gauff tested positive for the coronavirus, forcing her to pull out of the Tokyo Olympics.

Shirley Fry Irvin, a tennis player who in the preopen era swept the singles and doubles titles in the four Grand Slam tournaments, died Tuesday at her home in Naples, Florida. She was 94. Irvin was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1970. She won the French title in 1951, the Wimbledon and U.S. titles in 1956, and the Australian title in 1957. She was one of only 10 women to win the singles titles at all four of those tournaments. She also won 12 women’s doubles championships in those four tournaments, the first 11 partnered with Doris Hart and the 12th with Althea Gibson.
Golf: Seamus Power won the Barbasol Championship for his first PGA Tour victory, beating J.T. Poston with a tap-in par on the sixth hole of a playoff.
Area baseball: Will Stroud of the Albany Dutchmen was named the PGCBL’S Player of the Week after batting .500 (7-for-14) with two doubles, seven RBIS, and four stolen bases. On the season, Stroud’s is batting .384, which is good for second in the PGCBL to go with his 16 RBIS.
Soccer: Robin Lod scored a late goal and Minnesota United beat Seattle 1-0 to end the Sounders’ Mls-record 13-game unbeaten streak to open a season . ... Atlanta United fired coach Gabriel Heinze following a 2-4-7 start for 10th place in the Eastern Conference. Assistant coach Rob Valentino was named interim head coach.
