MOVIE QUIZ

- — C.J. Lais Jr.

On Tuesday, Sean Penn turned 61. This weekend, he stars in “Flag Day,” a movie he directed, opposite Dylan Penn, his daughter with ex-wife Robin Wright. And you may not know it, but he got married again last year during the pandemic to 20-something actress, Leila George …… the daughter of actors Vincent D’onofrio (“Full Metal Jacket”) and Greta Scacchi (“Presumed Innocent”).

Did we mention that Penn is the son of TV and film director Leo Penn and actress Eileen Ryan? Or that Eddie Vedder’s daughter Olivia makes her vocal debut on the “Flag Day” soundtrack?

So yeah, this week’s quiz is all about Hollywood nepotism. Gee, I hope we can find some more examples.

1. Kirk Douglas starred in a 1963 Broadway play that he tried unsuccessfully for more than a decade to get made into a movie, at which point he gave the rights to the project to his son, Michael Douglas, who not only produced the film version, but saw it sweep the Oscars, including one for the lead actor who replaced the now-too-old Kirk Douglas in the role. Name the film.

2. Will Smith has appeared in “The Pursuit of Happyness” and “After Earth” with his son Jaden, and “I Am Legend” with daughter Willow. Besides their dual cameos as themselves in the 1998 mockumentary “Welcome to Hollywood,” the A-list superstar and his actress-producer wife Jada Pinkett Smith have never starred together in a feature film, true or false?

3. Other than Walter Huston (“The Treasure of the Sierra Madre”), John Huston (“The Treasure of the Sierra Madre”) and Anjelica Huston (“Prizzi’s Honor”), only one other Hollywood family can boast three generations of Oscar winners. Who are they?

A. Michael Redgrave, Vanessa Redgrave and Natasha Richardson B. Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda and Bridget Fonda C. Alfred Newman, David Newman and Randy Newman D. Carmine Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola and Sofia Coppola

4. What 1994 fact-based drama about writers starred Jennifer Jason Leigh (daughter of Vic Morrow), Matthew Broderick (son of James Broderick), Campbell Scott (son of George C, Scott and Colleen Dewhurst), Gwyneth Paltrow (daughter of Blythe Danner and Bruce Paltrow), Martha Plimpton (daughter of Keith Carradine), Sam Robards

(son of Lauren Bacall and Jason Robards), Rebecca Miller (daughter of Arthur Miller) and Nick Cassavetes (son of Gena Rowlands and John Cassavetes)?

5. Jeff Bridges famously appeared on his father Lloyd Bridges’ TV show “Sea Hunt,” but his first (uncredited) film role was as an infant alongside his mother and brother, Beau Bridges, in 1951’s “The Company She Keeps,” starring Jane Greer. Greer previously starred in a classic 1947 film noir, that was remade 37 years later with Jeff Bridges as one of the leads and Greer in a supporting role. Name both films.

6. Match the second-generation actress with their famous parent.

A. Angelina Jolie B. Dakota Johnson C. Kate Hudson D. Norah Jones

I. Melanie Griffith II. Ravi Shankar III. Jon Voight IV. Goldie Hawn

7. Ben Stiller and Destry Spielberg recently caught flack for stating that actors succeed based on merit, not family connections. Spielberg ’s father, Steven Spielberg, directed Stiller in only his second feature film role in what 1987 World War II film?

8. Clint Eastwood has at least eight children, many of whom have appeared in his movies, but which one has he worked with the most, at 14 times: Alison Eastwood, Kyle Eastwood or Scott Eastwood?

9. What famous mother and daughter actresses died within a day of each other in 2016?

10. Zooey Deschanel — who has an Oscarnominated cinematographer father and an actress mother, as well as a fellow acting sister — co-starred with Jake Gyllenhaal — who has an Oscar-nominated screenwriter mother and a director father, as well as a fellow acting, and fellow Oscar-nominated, sister — in a 2002 film with a leading performance from an actress whose father has been a popular and successful soap opera actor for more than 50 years. Name the film and the actress.
