Seattle Storm honored by Biden at White House

The Seattle Storm were honored by President Joe Biden at the White House to commemorat­e their 2020 championsh­ip, the fourth in franchise history.

The visit marked the first time that an NBA or WNBA team has visited the White House since the Cleveland Cavaliers were feted by Barack Obama in 2016. The two leagues rejected invitation­s during Donald Trump’s administra­tion.

Hockey: Hilary Knight tied former U.S. star Cammi Granato’s record for goals in women’s world hockey championsh­ip play with 44 in the United States’ 3-0 victory over Finland. The U.S. plays Russia on Tuesday.

NBA: Retired star J.R. Smith has enrolled at North Carolina A&T and is a freshman walk-on for the men’s golf team.

High schools: The parents of two teenage boys filed a federal lawsuit alleging their sons were sexually assaulted in a hazing tradition by older players on their suburban Chicago high school football team, and that three adult coaches were aware. In the lawsuit, the parents contend that the older boys surrounded their sons, pinned them to the ground and assaulted them with a broomstick with such force that it broke.

Obits: Jimmy Hayes, who won a national hockey championsh­ip at Boston College and played seven seasons in the NHL, has died at 31. No cause was given. He played for four teams, including the Bruins and Devils, and his younger brother, Kevin, is a center for the Flyers . ... Nick Volpe, who helped the Toronto Argonauts win two CFL titles in the 1950s, has died at 95.

Soccer: Xherdan Shaqiri ended his three-year spell at Liverpool by joining French club Lyon for a reported $13 million . ... Michail Antonio became West Ham’s all-time leading scorer in the Premier League era, moving onto 49 goals by netting twice in a 4-1 win over 10-man Leicester. ... Reynaldo Vasquez, the ex-president of El Salvador’s federation, pleaded guilty in a U.S. court to corruption in the ongoing FIFA bribery scandal.
