Man to face charges in 2017 Hudson shooting
Woman, two children were struck by bullets; 28-year-old indicted
A grand jury indicted a Hudson man on six counts of attempted murder for allegedly opening fire at a back porch in 2017, leaving a woman and two toddlers wounded, prosecutors said.
Kevron Lee, 28, was arraigned on a sealed indictment charging him with attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault, and six counts of reckless endangerment. The charges are all felonies.
Police Chief Edward Moore said there was a second suspect involved in the case, but there was little he could say about it at this time.
Hudson police are receiving new assistance from the public, Moore said, and he "expects the investigation to advance."
"We've been working on this continuously for four years, and it is still developing," he said.
Police were still investigating what Lee's target was the night he opened fire, Moore added.
The violence was part of a spate of shootings on the north side of the city that summer that wounded six people and killed 31-year-old Kevin L. Whitening
on Aug. 22, 2017. At the time, Hudson police said the violence was the result of a feud between drug crews.
Police faced criticism for not catching the shooter. An officer was posted at the front of the property when the shooting happened, stationed there to deter violence after earlier shootings in the city.
The two children, about 3 years old at the time, were both shot in the lower leg, according to Moore, but were able to quickly make full recoveries.
Five members of one of the drug crews were indicted on federal charges in March 2018 for allegedly conspiring to distribute crack cocaine. They pleaded guilty to distributing up to 484 grams of crack in Hudson in just four months in late 2017. Each received a 10-year sentence.
Moore said Lee was arrested
during a traffic stop in Hudson a couple days after the sealed indictment was handed up.
Columbia County Assistant District Attorney Ryan Carty asked Judge
Jonathan Nichols to hold Lee without bail, which Nichols granted.
Each of the attempted murder charges can carry up to 25 years in state prison.
Stephen Sharp of Albany has been assigned by the court to represent Lee.
