Burns pulls away for second PGA victory

JACKSON, Miss. — Sam Burns ran off four birdies in a six-hole stretch to start the back nine and pulled away for a 5-under 67 to win the Sanderson Farms Championsh­ip on Sunday for his second PGA Tour victory this year.

Against a list of contenders looking for their first win, Burns showed what it takes at the Country Club of Jackson by playing flawlessly on the back nine.

More golf: Celine Boutier birdied two of her last three holes for an 8-under 63 and won the Shoprite LPGA Classic. Starting the final round five shots behind, Boutier ran off six birdies on the front nine of the windy Bayside Course at Seaview . ... In the European PGA, Danny Willett of England celebrated his birthday by closing with a 4-under 68 for a two-shot victory in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championsh­ip on the Old Course at St. Andrews.

NBA: Brooklyn and the Lakers kicked off the league’s preseason schedule Sunday, though they did so largely without their biggest names in the Nets’ 123-97 victory.

NHL: Tristan Jarry made 25 saves to lead the Penguins to a 5-1 preseason win over Detroit.

Soccer: Mohamed Salah weaved through player after player, resisting challenges before coolly placing the ball in the corner of the net. Liverpool had only five minutes to celebrate before Kevin De Bruyne’s deflected strike drew Manchester City level for a second time as the winners of the last two Premier League titles draw 2-2 . ... Jack Elliott scored in the first half to help Philadelph­ia beat Columbus, 3-0 . ... Johnny Russell scored twice and Kansas City beat Houston, 4-2 . ... Jaroslaw Niezgoda scored on header in the 83rd minute and Portland beat Inter Miami, 1-0 . ... Yeferson Soteldo had a goal and assist and Toronto FC beat Chicago, 3-1. .. Joe Willis made three saves to help Nashville tie NYC FC, 0-0.

Tennis: Garbine Muguruza rallied to beat Ons Jabeur 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 in the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic . ... Second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka says she has tested positive for the coronaviru­s and will miss the upcoming BNP Paribas Open.
