MLB ROUNDUP Riley drives in 2, Braves beat Mets

New York loses 5-0 in the final game of once-promising 2021

Austin Riley drove in two runs with two hits and the Atlanta Braves looked postseason ready in a 5-0 win over Noah Syndergaar­d and the New York Mets in Sunday’s final regular season game for both teams.

Syndergaar­d (0-1) allowed two runs, including a leadoff homer to Jorge Soler, in his one scheduled inning. It was his second start after returning from Tommy John surgery.

The Mets (77-85) were held to three hits. They suffered one final letdown in their disappoint­ing season as they failed to win the season series against the Braves.

Braves right-hander Charlie Morton allowed one hit in 2 scoreless innings.

Indians 6, Rangers 0: Aaron Civale allowed only three singles while pitching six scoreless innings, Yu Chang homered and the Cleveland Indians closed out their 107th and final season under that name.

Marlins 5, Phillies 4: Nick Fortes hit a tiebreakin­g two-run home run in the fourth inning, as Miami Marlins closed their 11th losing season in 12 years.

Reds 6, Pirates 3: Joey Votto capped off a resurgent season by hitting his 36th home run, Nick Castellano­s reached the 100-RBI plateau for the second time in his career and the Cincinnati Reds topped Pittsburgh.

Giants 11, Padres 4: The San Francisco Giants finally won the NL West without needing to wait for the rival Dodgers’ result on the season’s final day, pounding San Diego 11-4 for a franchise-record 107th victory.

Astros 7, Athletics 6: AL batting champion Yuli Gurriel hit a winning RBI single in the ninth inning.

Cubs 3, Cardinals 2: Matt Duffy extended his hitting streak to a careerhigh 13 games with a pair of runscoring singles to help Chicago to victory in a game that was halted after seven innings by rain.

Dodgers 10, Brewers 3: Trea Turner hit his second grand slam in less than 48 hours to easily wrap up the NL batting title, and the Los Angeles won for their 106th victory only to finish as the winningest-second place team in major league history.

Diamondbac­ks 5, Rockies 4: Josh Vanmeter hit a tiebreakin­g homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to give Arizona the victory.

Tigers 5, White Sox 2: Daz Cameron’ homered leading off the ninth to spark a three-run inning, and Detroit closed their fifth straight losing season.

Twins 7, Royals 3: Byron Buxton and Jorge Polanco hit homers and Minnesota beat Kansas City in their final game of the season.

Blue Jays 12, Orioles 4: George Springer hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. launched his 48th homer as Toronto romped to a blowout of Baltimore that wasn’t enough to avoid playoff eliminatio­n.
