Monroe stays tough in goal

Shen grad has four shutouts for Siena

It was Senior Day for the Siena men’s soccer game last Saturday in Loudonvill­e and senior Greg Monroe came up big once again as the Saints battled Marist in a 0-0 double-overtime contest. Monroe tied his career high with 11 saves in the game.

Monroe, from Clifton Park and a Shenendeho­wa High graduate, has played in all but 25 minutes in front of the net this season, and he and the team sport a 6-6-3 overall record and a 2-3-2 mark in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. He has given up 23 goals (1.49 goalsagain­st average) with 73 saves (.760 save percentage). The Marist shutout was his fourth of the season.

In his Siena career, Monroe has played in 58 games and has given up 99 goals with 267 saves and nine shutouts. He has a 17-29-10 record.

Hanna Raymond (Niskayuna)

The senior defender is one of four area players seeing considerab­le action with the Union women’s soccer team. The Dutchwomen are 6-7-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the Liberty League. The Niskayuna High graduate has started all 15 games and has an assist. Senior Fiona Zimmerman of Niskayuna (Niskayuna High) has played in 15 games with seven starts and has a goal. Junior Mia Milliken of Bethlehem (Albany Academy for Girls) and sophomore Meghan Piser of Latham (Shaker High) both have an assist.

Charlotte Macken (Clifton Park)

The 5-foot-3 senior is a defensive specialist/libero for the Ualbany women’s volleyball team, and the Shenendeho­wa High graduate is doing her job. Macken leads the 8-13 Great Danes in digs with 322 and service aces with 25. She has also chipped in with 95 assists. Macken has played in all 21 matches and all 80 sets. She has posted double figures in digs in all but one match and has totaled a season-best 24 in two matches.

Juliana Venduro (Guilderlan­d)

The 5-7 freshman outside hitter has played in 21 matches and 64 sets for the St. Rose women’s volleyball team. The Golden Knights are 7-15 overall and 1-7 in Northeast-10 Conference play after a 3-0 league loss at Stonehill last Saturday. The Guilderlan­d High graduate has 123 digs, 88 kills, 17 total blocks and 13 service aces. Venduro

had a college career-high 14 digs in a 3-0 nonleague victory over Queens on Oct. 19 in Flushing.

Alyssa Fitzgerald (Queensbury)

The junior is the leading scorer on the Sage field hockey team. The Gators are 3-12 overall and 2-6 in the Empire 8 Conference. The team has scored 11 goals and the Queensbury High graduate has five of them. She also has two assists, two game-winners and two defensive saves. Freshman Shauna Lanoue of Troy (Columbia High) has an assist and a defensive save. Graduate student Katelyn Tavarres of Queensbury (Queensbury High) and junior Katie Flood of Ballston Lake (Shenendeho­wa High) are also seeing action.

Sophie Sacco (Schenectad­y)

The 6-1 sophomore middle hitter has started 23 matches and played in 82 sets for the Skidmore women’s volleyball team. The

Thoroughbr­eds are 10-15 overall and 3-4 in Liberty League play but have dropped their past five matches. The Niskayuna High graduate is second on the team in total blocks with 43 and third in kills with 125. She had a season-high 12 kills in a 3-2 victory over MCLA on Oct. 1 and seven kills and six blocks in a 3-1 loss to Stevens on Oct. 15.

Kevin Kampula (Albany)

The sophomore and freshman Cheick Meite of Albany, both Albany High graduates, formed a one-two offensive punch for the Hudson Valley men’s soccer team, the Vikings finishing 4-9 after a 5-0 loss to Fulton-montgomery in the first round of the NJCAA Region III Tournament last Sunday in Johnstown. Kampula finished with six goals and two assists for 14 points and two game-winners. Meite had six goals for 12 points with one game-winner.
