Most offensive players in field hockey would characterize scoring eight goals in a season as a successful campaign. For Scotia senior star Olivia Geniti, eight goals are all in a day’s work.

Geniti, a four-year varsity standout who is set to play her college field hockey at the University of Maine, established a new state record for goals in a game last week when she produced eight goals and two assists to lead the fourth-seeded Tartans past fifth-seeded Glens Falls 12-1 in the Section II Class B quarterfinals.

“It did not really register at first,” Geniti said regarding tallying eight goals. “After a few days, I thought, ‘Wow, I did that.’ As I have gotten older and my role has changed on the team since freshman year, I have been able to score more.”

For her efforts, Geniti has been selected as the Times Union’s Girls’ Athlete of the Week for the period of Oct. 18-24.

Earlier this season, Geniti scored seven goals in a game to tie a record shared by several players across the state, including Johnstown’s Taryn Ringer, who is now playing at Duke University. Against Glens Falls, Geniti scored four times in the first half to help provide a 5-1 advantage. The senior added four more goals in the second half to establish the new state goalscoring standard for a game.

“At first, we started slow. It was a good game,” Geniti said. “We wanted to

keep pressing and keep our energy up.”

Geniti said having her college decision made makes things easier for her final scholastic field hockey season.

“Obviously, I still have to work hard and put in the time, but (making the college decision) takes a lot of pressure off worrying where I would go,” Geniti said. “When I picked Maine, it felt right. I knew after that, I could just focus on my game.”

Geniti, who is set to major in biology at Maine, had her season end Wednesday with a semifinal loss against topseeded South Glens Falls. She finished with 35 goals.

“It was great to be back playing a full regular season and sectionals again,” Geniti said.
