Buchanan scores eighth goal of season to lift Revolution past Colorado

Tajon Buchanan scored his eighth goal of the season and the New England Revolution beat the Colorado Rapids 1-0 on Wednesday night to break the MLS record for points in a season with 73.

New England (22-4-7), the Supporters’ Shield winner, broke the mark of 72 for a 34match season set by Los Angeles FC in 2019.

The Revolution have one game left in the regular season, a home game against Inter Miami on Nov. 7.

New England coach Bruce Arena tied Sigi Schmid’s MLS record with his 240th regularsea­son victory.

Buchanan settled a cross from Adam Buksa with his chest, took two touches to get away from a defender, and slotted a shot past William Yarbrough from a difficult angle in the 74th minute.

Colorado (15-7-10) clinched a playoff berth Saturday.

NYCFC 1, Chicago 0: Valentin Castellano­s scored on a penalty kick and New York City FC beat the Chicago Fire (9-17-7). New York City (13-11-8) moved past Orlando City into fourth in the Eastern Conference standings with 47 points.

D.C. 1, New York 0: Kevin Paredes scored in the ninth minute and D.C. United held on for a victory over the Red Bulls. D.C. United (13-14-5) snapped a four-match winless streak. New York (12-12-7) had its eight-game undefeated streak come to an end.

Philadelph­ia 2, Toronto 2: Substitute Sergio Santos scored on a header in the 77th minute to give the Philadelph­ia Union (13-8-11) a tie with Toronto FC (6-17-9).

Atlanta 2, Inter Miami 1: Luiz Araujo had a goal and an assist and Josef Martinez scored to help Atlanta United (12-9-10) top Inter Miami (11-16-5).

Nashville 6, Cincinnati 3: C.J. Sapong and Randall Leal each scored two goals and Nashville beat Cincinnati to clinch a playoff spot. Nashville (12-416) scored four straight goals in the

second half to top Cincinnati (4-20-8).

Columbus 3, Orlando 1: Lucas Zelarayan had a goal and two assists and Columbus (11-13-8) beat Orlando City (12-9-11) to keep the defending champion Crew’s playoff hopes alive.

Salt Lake 2, Dallas 1: Damir Kreilach and Albert Rusnak each scored in the final 10 minutes and Real Salt Lake (13-12-6) beat FC Dallas (6-15-11).
