Paddack keeps Twins hot

Righty shuts down Orioles; Correa gets go-ahead hit

Chris Paddack pitched effectivel­y into the sixth, and Carlos Correa hit a tiebreakin­g single that same inning to lift the Minnesota Twins to their 10th win in 11 games, a 2-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Monday.

Paddack (1-2) allowed a run and four hits in 51⁄3 innings. The right-hander left with men on first and third and one out. Joe Smith then took the mound and got Ryan Mountcastl­e to bounce into a double play that kept the Twins up 2-1.

Griffin Jax and Emilio Pagan each worked a hitless inning, and rookie Jhoan Duran pitched a perfect ninth for his first career save.

Tyler Wells allowed a run and four hits in five innings for Baltimore. Bryan Baker (1-1) allowed a leadoff single in the sixth to Byron Buxton, who went to second on a groundout and scored on Correa’s single.

The Twins took a 1-0 lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Ryan Jeffers. The Orioles tied it in the bottom half when Rougned Odor hit a leadoff

triple and came home on a sacrifice fly by Ramon Urias.

Minnesota third baseman Jose Miranda made his big-league debut. Ranked as baseball’s No. 93 prospect by MLB Pipeline, he went hitless in four at-bats.

Cardinals 1, Royals 0: Paul Goldschmid­t hit an early homer and former Met Steven Matz and the St. Louis bullpen made it stand up. Matz (3-1) scattered four hits in six innings. He walked none and struck out four. Zack Greinke (0-2) gave up three hits in six innings for KC, which has lost four straight.

White Sox 3, Angels 0: Dylan Cease struck out 11 to

match a career best and gave up just one hit in seven sparkling innings for Chicago. Adam Engel hit an RBI double in the sixth. Angels two-way star Shohei Ohtani didn’t start, a day after making an early exit because of groin tightness. The reigning AL MVP grounded out as a pinch-hitter in the eighth.

D’backs 5, Marlins 4: Zac Gallen outpitched Pablo Lopez as Arizona built a lead and held on. David Peralta homered, singled twice and drove in three, and Daulton Varsho hit two doubles for the D’backs, who have won five of seven. Arizona’s Jordan Luplow had two hits and two RBIS.

Miranda to make his big league debut. The Twins also recalled left-hander Jovani Moran from St. Paul, put outfielder Kyle Garlick (right calf strain) on the 10-day IL and optioned catcher Jose Godoy and right-hander Cole Sands to St. Paul.

Brewers: Milwaukee designated right-handed pitcher Jose Urena for assignment and activated infielder Luis Urias from the injured list.

Mariners: Adam Frazier and Seattle argued the first of this year’s delayed salary arbitratio­n cases, with the second baseman/outfielder asking for a raise from $4.3 million to $8 million and the team arguing for $6.7 million.

Orioles: Baltimore designated infielder Kelvin Gutierrez for assignment.
