In a perfect world, trainer Chad Brown of Mechanicville finds the winner’s circle on Saturday with 3-1 morning-line favorite Zandon for Brown’s first Derby win. But there are several horses who can win, including a couple of Bob Baffert horses who are no longer being trained by Baffert because he is serving a suspension. Baffert disciple Tim Yakteen will send Messier and Taiba to the starting gate and either one could pull off an upset. If Messier, at odds of 8-1, gets to the lead under Johnny Velazquez he’s capable of going wire to wire for the win. Rodger Wyland is the sports director for Newschannel 13.
