Lush, green lawns come at too high a price

Like Chaim Picker in his letter “Lawn chemicals affect more than treated lawn,” April 23, which expressed concerns about the overuse and dangers of lawn chemicals, I share the belief that this is a growing problem. The little yellow warning signs after chemical applicatio­ns certainly suggest that these chemicals may be harmful. I think that it is reasonable to conclude that many of these chemicals drain into our water supply.

I have thought about how when I was a boy growing up in Albany it was fairly common to find toads and garter snakes on our lawns. No more. Even bumblebees were there but are now much rarer. These are signs that we ignore at our peril for the vanity of having a dark, ultra-green
