DA: No prosecution planned in case of cat hoarding

-

MENANDS — The Albany County District Attorney’s office said Tuesday it has resolved without prosecution a case involving what appeared to be a large number of cats abandoned at a shelter last month.

The cat owners had good intentions, but they were ill-equipped to handle the number of animals in their possession, according to a district attorney’s office statement. Since the incident, the owners worked with the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society to place nearly 30 cats in the shelter’s care. They are all recovering well, with the kittens expected to be ready for adoption in about a month. The older cats will be ready for adoption sooner, possibly within weeks.

The humane society said in the statement they were able to work with the family to plan for the future if they find themselves in the same position. The shelter offers lowcost spay and neuter surgeries starting at $10 to those who qualify by income. It has a pet food pantry available to anyone in the community who expresses a need. They can be reached at 518-4348128 or community-relations@mohawkhumane.org.
