Raniere wants judge change

‘Pre-existing biases and prejudices’ hurt his case, NXIVM leader contends

- By Robert Gavin

The attorney for Keith Raniere wants a new judge to consider the NXIVM leader’s latest bid for a retrial, saying the judge who presided over Raniere’s trial lacked “judicial temperament” and showed a “personal distaste” for the former Halfmoon-based guru.

In a motion filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Brooklyn, Raniere attorney Joseph Tully called for another judge besides Senior U.S. District Judge Nicholas Garaufis, noting the trial judge threatened to have one of Raniere’s former attorneys arrested last summer during a heated courtroom exchange.

The California-based Tully wants a new judge to rule on evidence he submitted last week: the defense’s claim that federal agents planted evidence to frame Raniere of possessing child pornography

placed since April 28. The auction closes at 10:20 a.m. Monday.

Regional transportation planning falls under the auspices of the area’s metropolitan planning organization, in this case the Capital District Transportation Committee.

The CDTC’S policy board consists of elected and appointed officials from eight cities; Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga and Schenectady counties; two rotating towns and villages; the state DOT; and several state and regional transportation authorities and organizations, according to executive director Sandra Misiewicz.

Among CDTC’S primary functions is creating a Unified Planning Work Program, which identifies transportation planning activities in the region each year. The CDTC solicits proposals for studies from local governments and awards them on a competitive basis. Proposals must be aligned with the CDTC’S metropolitan transportation plan, known as New Visions 2050.

In addition to the UPWP and metropolitan transportation plan, the CDTC is also responsible for developing a capital program of transportation projects, known as the Transportation Improvement Program.

The public can comment on

the CDTC’S activities and offer ideas online at www.cdtcmpo.org/participate.

More from the CDTC: The CDTC has scheduled several public and virtual events to present the proposed route for the Patroon Creek Greenway:

10 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 18, Empire State Plaza Farmer’s Market

4:30-6:30 p.m. May 19, Honest Weight Food Co- Op

6 p.m. May 24, online, patroongreenway.com

The trail would connect Albany’s Hudson riverfront with Six Mile Waterworks Park and Rensselaer Lake.

The CDTC is also making

federal planning funds available to assist local governments, law enforcement agencies and other organizations in small-scale transportation safety education and training programs. The program has $20,000 for traffic safety infrastructure demonstration projects and $15,000 available for traffic safety events hosted by local police departments.

County Route 103, Albany County: Starting at 7:30 a.m., Monday, sections of County Route 103 will be closed to through traffic for culvert pipe replacements until 3 p.m. daily. Work is scheduled to be finished by May 30.
