Rugby players lose everything in blaze

- By Pete Demola

Among the 15 people displaced after a fire ravaged two homes on Hudson Avenue on Sunday were seven University at Albany rugby players.

One day later, a crowdfunding campaign has generated more than $16,000 as of Monday afternoon to help the athletes get back on their feet.

“These men are some of the most kind-hearted and caring people I know, not to mention amazing teammates as well,” wrote organizer Gabriella Asher on the Gofundme page.

The blaze started at 489 Hudson Ave. before spreading to a second building. The flames were so hot, they scorched the vehicles in front of the building, officials said.

Devoured in the early morning blaze were the players’ electronics, furniture, clothes and memorabilia.

“Some lost everything they owned,” Asher wrote.

One person was helped out of the buildings by firefighters and taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital. The person’s condition is unknown, officials said.

The cause remains under investigation, officials said on Monday.
