Valleycats suffer first loss of ’22

Florence uses 3-run third inning to break tie and cruise to win

The Tri-city Valleycats suffered their first loss of the 2022 campaign, dropping a 7-1 decision to the host Florence Y’alls on Friday evening in Florence, Ky.

Florence used a three-run third inning to break a 1-1 tie and cruise to the win to move to 1-1 on the season. Tri-city dipped to 1-1 with the loss.

Axel Johnson’s two-run single along with an RBI single by Brennan Price snapped the deadlock in the third and put Florence ahead for good.

Brad Zunica put the Valleycats in front 1-0 with an RBI single in the first before Johnson evened the game with a fielder’s choice RBI in the second.

The Y’alls scored single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh — capped by a solo home run by Johnson — to make it a comfortabl­e six run victory. Johnson finished the night 2-for-4 with a homer and 4 RBIS to lead Florence.

Juan Santana was 2-for-3 with a double for Tri-city.

The Valleycats and Y’alls close their series on Saturday back in Florence.
