State, regional unemployment rates continue fall
With more joining workforce, April marks fourth straight month of declining joblessness
New York’s unemployment rate continued to fall in April as more and more people joined the workforce.
The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell from 4.6 percent to 4.5 percent in April, according to preliminary results from the state Department of Labor.
This marked the fourth consecutive month the unemployment rate declined.
The rate, not seasonally adjusted, has gone from 7.7 percent to 4.2 percent from April 2021 to April 2022.
The number of private-sector jobs in New York state increased over the month by 23,600, or 0.3 percent, to 7,937,300 in April 2022.
The Capital Region added 11,300 nonfarm jobs compared to April 2021 for a 2.5 percent increase. Statewide, 449,300 nonfarm jobs were added in the same period, for an increase of 5 percent.
That compares to a 4.6 percent increase nationally, with 6.6 million new jobs.
New York City led the state in growth at 7 percent with 293,800 jobs added compared to April 2021, while Ithaca lagged the rest of the state with a loss of 1,100 jobs or a 1.8 percent drop.
