The Siena men’s basketball team has filled its final scholarship for the 2022-23 season with San Jose State transfer Eduardo Lane, a 6-foot-11 center from Aquiduana, Brazil, who has one season of eligibility remaining.

“Eduardo is a skilled, 6-11 center who is excited to play for Siena,” coach Carmen Maciariello said in Friday’s news release. “He is a talented passer who will be a low block threat, as well as a defensive presence in the paint.”

Lane hasn’t played the past two seasons because of injury. In his lone healthy season with the Spartans, Lane averaged 3.3 points and 2.2 rebounds in 10.2 minutes while shooting 54 percent from the field in 2019-20. He started the first six games that season and grabbed a season-high eight rebounds at UCLA.

If he’s healthy, Lane could back up Siena starting center Jackson Stormo, who is entering his final season.

Siena has had Brazilian players before. Paolo Morastoni was a walk-on from 2017 to 2019 and Joao Braga played for the Saints from 2005 to 2007.

Maciariello has signed a seven-player class that includes four international recruits: Lane, Turkish guard Zach Tekin, Icelandic wing Sveinn Birgisson and Irish preferred walk-on forward Killian Gribben. Lane is the only transfer and non-incoming freshman in the class.

Before San Jose State, Lane spent two years at Marshalltown (Iowa) Community College. He averaged 8.0 points and 3.6 rebounds and shot 60 percent from the field over 53 games.
