100 YEARS AGO Mayor hits the bull’s-eye
Albany Mayor William S. Hackett proved that besides being a city executive and bank president, he was still quite the marksman. He stopped into the armory pistol range to see the police department shooting qualifications, and although he protested that he hadn’t fired a gun since the early 1890s when he was first sergeant of “A” company, Tenth Infantry, he was prevailed upon to take a turn at target practice. He aimed and fired the bullet through the center of the bull’s-eye. This earned him a score of 21 out of 25, the highest of the day, tying him with motorcycle patrolman Edward Rafferty.
