Ready for Juneteenth
Several events planned to mark historic milestone
Here are Capital Region Juneteenth events:
Friday-sunday
A Hamilton Hill Arts Center’s Celebrating the End of Slavery. Various times all three days; June 17 at Vale Park in Schenectady, June 18 at Central Park in Schenectady, and June 19 at Sankofa Sculpture Park in Schenectady.
Saturday
A Juneteenth Freedom Festival by the African American Cultural Center of the Capital Region. Noon to 5 p.m. from 105 S. Pearl St. to Morton Avenue in Albany.
A The Underground Railroad Education Center’s Juneteenth. Noon to 4 p.m., 194 Livingston Ave., Albany.
A The circa 1729 Van Alstyne Homestead & Museum, 42 Moyer St, Canajoharie. 3 to 4 p.m., with keynote speaker, Montgomery County Historian Kelly Y. Farquhar presenting on the most recent inductee this summer to the National Baseball Hall of Fame, Bud Fowler, as well as 54th Regiment volunteer C. Hoke (featured in the film “Glory”). Both are from western Montgomery County. There will also be underground railroad maps for the village of Canajoharie. Admission $8.
A Quintocracy for Juneteenth. Music by Black composers. 10 a.m. at Troy Public Library, 100 Second St., Troy.
A Author Bob Conner will discuss emancipation during the Civil War through the stories of Generals Granger, Montgomery and Grant. 2 p.m., New York State Military Museum, 61 Lake Ave., Saratoga Springs.
Sunday
A Proctor’s Juneteenth
Celebration with Sidney Outlaw. 2:30 p.m. at 432
State St., Schenectady. $25 tickets.
A Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation’s tour “Brandtville Boogie” with Carol Daggs, 10:30 a.m. Historically African American rural farming

Monday
A Saratoga BLM’S 2nd annual Juneteenth Event. 2 p.m. Orenda Pavilion, Saratoga Spa State Park, Geyser Loop Road.
A First Juneteenth Celebration at the Frederick Allen Elks Lodge #609, 1 to 2:30 p.m., 69 Beekman St., Saratoga Springs. Program of sharing, daring, and caring, with historical insights, dramatic offerings, inspiring words, and unifying, uplifting music, topped off with ice cream and cake. Co-sponsor MLK Saratoga.
