Story’s blast helps Red Sox beat Tigers
Hits go-ahead 3-run homer in 4th, Vazquez adds solo shot in 7th
Trevor Story hit a three-run homer out of Fenway Park, Christian Vazquez added a solo shot for a key run in the seventh inning and the Boston Red Sox beat the Detroit Tigers 5-4 on Tuesday night.
Boston, wearing unusual yellow jerseys with blue trim, went ahead 4-3 in the fourth when Story put a hanging slider from rookie Beau Brieske (1-6) on Lansdowne Street for his 11th homer this season.
Vazquez lined Andrew Chafin’s first pitch into the Green Monster seats for a 5-3 lead in the seventh.
Rich Hill (3-4) gave up three runs and seven hits in five innings with six strikeouts.
Matt Strahm allowed Jonathan Schoop’s leadoff homer in the ninth — Schoop’s team-high sixth home run this year. John Schreiber got his second save this season when Miguel Cabrera hit a game-ending groundout with a man on.
Boston was outhit 11-8 but won for the fourth time in five games and improved to 15-4 in June. The Red Sox are a season-high seven games above .500 at 38-31. Detroit has lost eight of 10. Javier Baez tripled and scored in the first and added a solo homer in the third. Cabrera singled in each of his first three at-bats and needs three hits to tie Rod Carew for 28th at 3,053.
Dodgers 8, Reds 2: Tony Gonsolin became the first pitcher in the majors to win nine games, Freddie Freeman drove in five runs and Los Angeles beat Cincinnati.
Nationals 3, Orioles 0: Erick Fedde allowed two hits over six innings, and Washington beat Baltimore for its second straight victory following an eight-game skid.
Pirates 7, Cubs 1: Bligh Madris hit his first major league home run and fellow rookie Roansy Contreras pitched five solid innings to lead Pittsburgh.
Marlins 9, Rockies 8: Garrett Cooper lined a tiebreaking double in the eighth, and Miami overcame a four-run hole for just its third win in nine games.
Giants 12, Braves 10: Mike Yastrzemski broke out of a slump with a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth, and Joc Pederson and Austin Wynns homered for San Francisco.
Rangers 7, Phillies 0: Nathaniel Lowe and Jonah Heim hit consecutive homers off former teammate Kyle Gibson, Martin Perez went six innings in his fifth scoreless start this season and Texas beat Philadelphia.
Cardinals 6, Brewers 2: Nolan Gorman went 4 of 4 with two solo homers and four RBIS as St. Louis beat Milwaukee to regain a share of the NL Central lead.
Guardians 6, Twins 5 (11): Andres Gimenez had an RBI single in the 11th inning and Cleveland beat Minnesota to move into a tie with the Twins atop the AL Central Division.
Notes: Pitcher Max Fried became the fifth member of the World Series champion Atlanta Braves to go to salary arbitration, asking for $6.85 million while the team argued for $6.6 million.
