Yanks, Torres agree to $9.95M, 1-year deal

NEW YORK — The New York Yankees agreed to a $9.95 million, oneyear contract with Gleyber Torres, avoiding an arbitratio­n hearing with the infielder by reaching a deal at the midpoint of proposed salaries.

The 26-year-old Torres hit .257 with 24 homers and 76 RBIS in 140 games for the AL East champs last year.

Torres had asked for a raise from $6.25 million to $10.2 million in arbitratio­n, and the Yankees had offered the second baseman $9.7 million.

A two-time All-star, Torres is a .265 hitter with 98 homers and 310 RBIS in 576 career games.

He was New York’s last remaining player in arbitratio­n.

Twenty-nine major leaguers remain scheduled for hearings from Monday through Feb. 17.

Harrison, Phils reach 1-year deal

PHILADELPH­IA — Free agent infielder Josh Harrison and the Philadelph­ia Phillies reached agreement on a one-year deal.

Harrison, 35, batted .272 with seven home runs and 27 RBIS in 119 games for the Chicago White Sox last season. He played mostly at second base and third base, with brief stints in the outfield and at shortstop.

An NL All-star in 2014 and 2017, Harrison is a career .272 hitter.

Giants reportedly add Perez

San Francisco reportedly agreed to terms with 34-year-old catcher Roberto Perez.

Georgia QB Bennett arrested

Stetson Bennett, who led Georgia to its second consecutiv­e college football national championsh­ip earlier this month, was arrested in Dallas early Sunday on a misdemeano­r public intoxicati­on charge, where he is preparing for the NFL draft.

Officers responded to reports of a man banging on doors in the 1600 block of Tribeca Way at 7:10 a.m. Eastern time, Dallas police said in a statement to The Washington Post.

Bennett was released around noon Eastern and left without comment.

Malinin wins 1st U.S. men’s title

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Ilia Malinin won his first national men’s title, delivering a 177.38 free skate for a total score of 287.74 on the final day of the U.S. Figure Skating Championsh­ips.

Malinin landed three quadruple jumps and retained his 10-point lead over second-place finisher Jason Brown. Andrew Torgashev topped a strong weekend with a bronze medal, recording the highest segment score of the event with 177.78.

Brown’s 177.06 in the free skate gave him the silver medal. The 28year-old veteran had not competed since finishing sixth at the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

Acura, Shank, Helio sweep Rolex

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Acura dominated the debut of hybrid engines in North American sports car racing with a 1-2 finish at the Rolex 24 at Daytona, where Helio Castroneve­s and the automaker won the prestigiou­s endurance race for a third consecutiv­e year.

Castroneve­s won the Rolex in 2021 in an Acura with Wayne Taylor Racing and won with Meyer Shank Racing the last two seasons. Castroneve­s, who turns 48 in May, was overcome with emotion after Tom Blomqvist closed out the victory.

Simon Pagenaud won for the second consecutiv­e year and is teammates with Castroneve­s in Indycar.

Liverpool's Cup title defense over

Liverpool became the latest highprofil­e club to exit the FA Cup as the defending champions conceded a goal in the second minute of stoppage time to lose 2-1 at Brighton.

Kaoru Mitoma drove a close-range finish into the roof of the net to earn Brighton a come-from-behind win.

PARIS — Striker Folarin Balogun equalized deep into stoppage time as Reims earned a 1-1 draw at French league leader Paris Saint- Germain, keeping PSG three points ahead of second-place Lens.

Milan winless streak reaches 6

MILAN — AC Milan’s woeful start to the year went from bad to worse, potentiall­y putting title-winning coach Stefano Pioli’s job at risk.

Milan was humiliated 5-2 by Sassuolo to leave the defending champion without a win in its past six matches.
