Maryland surges past No. 3 Purdue

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Jahmir Young scored 20 points and Maryland used a dominant stretch in the middle of the second half Thursday night to rally past No. 3 Purdue 68-54 and deal the Boilermake­rs their second consecutiv­e loss.

The Terrapins (18-8, 9-6 Big Ten) trailed 37-29 before erupting with a 29-4 burst to take control.

Hakim Hart added 13 points for Maryland, which defeated a top-three team for the first time since toppling then-no. 3 Iowa 74-68 on Jan. 28, 2016. Maryland improved to 14-1 at home this season.

Students stormed the court — and one even climbed onto the basket — after Maryland earned its fourth victory of the season over a ranked team. Exactly 10 years earlier, fans rushed onto the same court after Maryland beat then-no. 2 Duke.

Zach Edey and Braden Smith both scored 18 points for Purdue (23-4, 12-4), which has lost three of four — all on the road.

Women

Florida State 78, Syracuse

Jahmir Young had 20 points for the Terrapins, who had a 29-4 run in their victory against the Boilermake­rs.

65: Ta’niya Latson scored 19 points, Erin Howard drilled a critical 3-pointer in the final minute and No. 24 Florida State defeated Syracuse to end a two-game losing streak. Howard’s 3 from the right corner with 48.1 seconds to go gave Florida State a 74-65 lead. Florida State (21-7, 10-5 ACC) closed the game on an 11-0 run. Makayla Timpson scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds with three blocks for the Seminoles, recording her 12th double-double of the season, which is tied for the third-most in program history. Howard had 11 points. Dyaisha Fair had 19 points for the Orange (16-11, 7-9).

Virginia Tech 61, Duke 45: Elizabeth Kitley and Georgia Amoore each scored 20 points to lead No. 11 Virginia Tech to a victory over No. 9 Duke.
