Sage sophomore Faraj named Empire 8 Player of the Year

Sage sophomore Syrita Faraj was named the Empire 8 Conference Player of the Year in women’s basketball on Wednesday and she proved she was worth the honor when she scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the league’s tournament semifinal on Friday in Pittsford. Despite that, the thirdseede­d Gators lost the game 75-71 to second-seeded Nazareth.

Faraj, a 5-foot-9 guard from Troy and a Tamarac High graduate, was also named to the league’s first team. She led the league in scoring with a 20.2 average. She scored in double figures in all 26 games she played in, reaching 32 points twice. She also was second on the team in rebounding (8.6) and had seven double-doubles. She was named the league’s Rookie of the Year as a freshman.

The Gators, who finished 17-10 overall and 12-6 in E-8 play, also got a solid effort from graduate student Giuliana Pritchard (Amsterdam High), who garnered second-team All-conference honors. She was third in the league in scoring (15.4) and second in rebounding (10.1).

Trevor Green (Troy)

The sophomore guard became just the fifth player in the history of the Hudson Valley men’s basketball program to score over 1,000 points in a career. He had 23 points in the Vikings’ 80-71 loss to Mohawk Valley in the NJCAA Region 3 semifinals on Saturday in Utica. That gave the Lansingbur­gh High graduate 1,004 points, which stands fourth in the record book. Green averaged 21.7 points and 8.7 rebounds this season with 107 assists, 53 steals and 36 blocked shots.

Emily Satterday (Latham)

The 5-foot-11 freshman forward/center was named North Atlantic Conference Rookie of the Year on Thursday after a big first season with the Cobleskill women’s basketball team. The Shaker High graduate, who earned Rookie of the

Week honors five times during the season, averaged 10.5 points and 12.6 rebounds for the 16-10 Fighting Tigers with 15 doubledoub­les.

Madison Meyer (Duanesburg)

The 5-foot-4 freshman guard and the Skidmore women’s basketball team are heading to the Division III Tournament after topping Ithaca 54-52 in the Liberty League title game on Sunday. The Duanesburg High graduate has played in 25 games with one start. She is averaging 5.1 points and 1.8 rebounds with 26 assists and a team-high 39 steals. The Thoroughbr­eds will take a 22-5 record into the tourney which begins Friday.

John Coddington (Amsterdam)

The 6-foot-3 senior had a solid performanc­e for the Sage men’s indoor track team at the Empire 8 Conference Championsh­ip last weekend in Rochester. The Broadalbin-perth High graduate finished second in the weight throw with a school record heave of 54 feet, 91⁄2 inches. He also finished third in the shot put with a 47-foot, 3-inch effort. Coddington will lead the Gators into the Division III All-atlantic Regionals Friday and Saturday at The Armory in New York City.

Christine Mallette (Gansevoort)

The sophomore sprinter helped the RPI women’s indoor track team finish third in the Liberty League Championsh­ip last weekend in Rochester. The South Glens Falls High graduate finished sixth in the 200meter dash (26.46) and helped the 4x400 relay finish fourth (4:13.48).

Hasjina Gaddy (Albany)

The 5-foot-11 junior forward wrapped up her season with the 11-8 Bryant & Stratton Albany women’s basketball team by scoring a career-high 33 points as the Bobcats topped Bryant & Stratton Syracuse 71-60 on Feb. 18 in Syracuse. The Albany High graduate was a perfect 13-for-13 from the floor and 7-for-8 from the free-throw line.
